Rebecca Foxx, Who I Help, Counseling and Psychotherapy

About Rebecca

I am an experienced psychotherapist specializing in trauma and anxiety disorders

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with the highest level of licensure as an LCSW-R. I received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at SUNY Oneonta in 2003. I also earned a BA in Writing from SUNY Potsdam in 1999. I completed my Master's in Social Work (MSW) as well as a Master’s in Criminal Justice (M.A.) in 2006 at SUNY Albany.

My work as a psychotherapist regularly draws from Buddhist Psychology principles. In May of 2016, I completed the 9-month Certificate Program in Mindfulness and Psychotherapy offered by the Institute of Meditation and Psychotherapy. I have a strong personal mindfulness meditation practice and I regularly incorporate mindfulness and embodied awareness practices into my work with clients.

I am a trauma-informed and polyvagal-informed therapist, recognizing that we are physiologically wired as human beings to respond in predictable ways to trauma and stress.  This orientation informs my training in "bottom up" or body-based therapies.

I have completed the advanced level of training in the Somatic Experiencing Professional Training Certificate Program. Somatic Experiencing is a body-oriented approach to the healing of trauma and other stress disorders.

I am trained and certified in providing the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP), a Polyvagal-informed music listening therapy which helps to shift the nervous system out of a chronic state of defense and into a physiological state of safety and calm.

I have completed the year-long professional training program Compassionate Inquiry (CI). CI is a trauma-informed therapy created by Dr. Gabor Maté, which combines elements of mindfulness, neuroscience, somatic and attachment therapies.

I am trained as a Mindful Self-Compassion Teacher through the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion.  I also developed the 8-week Mindful Authentic Connection Program, which teaches and applies skills of mindfulness, self-compassion, and body-awareness to the intention of living authentically.

I am trained in EMDR*, a treatment approach which has been empirically proven to be effective for the treatment of trauma related disorders and suffering. I completed my EMDR training through an EMDRIA approved Training program. *(Please note: I primarily use EMDR as a tool to compliment other primary therapy modalities. I no longer provide straight protocol-EMDR therapy and I do not offer EMDR as an adjunct to those who are in other concurrent therapy).

My background includes work with military veterans, individuals coping with new or worsening health conditions, survivors of physical and/or sexual trauma, and individuals involved in the criminal justice system.

Outside of my work as a psychotherapist, I am a musician (piano, guitar, singer/song writer) and a once upon a time, street and subway performer in Boston, MA. I love dogs, jigsaw puzzles, and good old silly humor.

 How I help

My approach is based in the belief that each person has the capacity to heal through   developing a willingness to compassionately turn toward their inner experiences. The path of self-discovery and healing is often an exciting, yet challenging process.

I view my role as a psychotherapist as someone who will walk beside you and help to compassionately guide you through this difficult process of self-exploration. I offer a safe, non-judgmental space for you to explore the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are impacting you.

I enjoy helping clients to safely explore and arrive at their own answers - answers about whether a challenge that is causing suffering can or cannot be changed through their own influence...answers as to what internal or interpersonal patterns may be creating barriers to change...and answers about how to shift these patterns and move in the direction of less suffering.

There are times when a source of pain is outside of one's control, for instance in the case of illness, loss, or when a loved one is struggling in some chronic way.  In these cases, there may often still be layers of suffering that can be transformed by how we hold and relate to them.  And sometimes, I may be there to sit with and help hold what cannot be changed, with compassion and care.

There are also times where a person may have untapped agency to reduce their own suffering and move in a new direction. In these cases, we will explore what conditioned or habitual, self-protective patterns, which may once have served you well, may now be narrowing the options available for responding to current challenges in new or more adaptive ways.

I am a mindfulness-oriented psychotherapist, believing that the key to establishing lasting change comes through developing skills in awareness and self-compassion so that we may notice our habitual reactions and choose instead to respond with personal wisdom.
